How it started

Our History

1924

Jenkins W.H. Spring and Axle Service Station was incorporated in 1924 by William Jenkins, with the company set up at its own address in Adelaide Terrace in Perth, directly opposite the old Ozone Hotel. At that time, the company offered spring manufacture and repair services along with axle and alignment services.

1933

Jenkins Springs Service Station adds cutting edge wheel and axle alignment instruments to their workshop and become pioneers in wheel alignment offering the service to customers.

1944

William Jenkins who was now a Perth City Councillor ran the business until his passing on June 13, 1944.  William’s wife Olive Jenkins took over administration of the company with James McCully being appointed as the company accountant.

1948

James McCully, a registered accountant, established an office above the Ozone Hotel on Adelaide Terrace after returning from the war with injuries. He subsequently acquired shares in the company then known as Jenkins Springs.

1951

James & Thelma McCully then purchased the remaining shares from Olive Jenkins, making the McCully family the sole owners of Jenkins Springs.

1953

The land at Adelaide Terrace was compulsorily acquired by the City of Perth and the company was re-located to new premises at 188 Railway Parade Bassendean, where operations still continue to this day.

1978

James McCully Jnr (James and Thelma’s grandson) joins the team at the age of 15 as an apprentice blacksmith.

1980

James completed his trade certificate in November of 1980 before undertaking studies at Curtin Night School in Small Business Administration.

1984

In 1984, Don and Hester McCully – the son and daughter-in-law of James senior and Thelma – bought the pair out before handing over the running of the company to their 21-year-old son, and James and Thelma’s grandson, James McCully Jnr.

1987

Jenkins Springs purchased what was at the time the largest spring maker in Western Australia, Metro Baldock Springs, from Metro Industries. This made Jenkins Springs the largest spring maker and suspension supplier in WA.

1997

Jenkins Springs rebranded to the name by which it is known today – West Coast Suspensions – to reflect its evolution from a spring maker to a full suspension specialist.

2007

Amid mounting competition from Australian spring and suspension manufacturers importing products from overseas, coupled with BHP’s gradual cessation of spring steel production, operations at the Metro Baldocks facility were discontinued. The land and buildings were subsequently sold, and both staff and machinery were consolidated at the Bassendean facility.

2011

As the business continued to experience growth, West Coast Suspensions expanded its administrative capacity by adding a second storey to the existing building, providing additional space to accommodate its growing team.

2014

To address increasing lead times and safeguard continuity of product supply, West Coast Suspensions acquired the property at 20 Durham Road to expand its warehousing capacity. This strategic move enabled the company to carry greater stock levels and maintain reliable service to its customers.

2020

In a strategic expansion initiative, West Coast Suspensions acquired land formerly occupied by Wesfarmers Insurance adjoining the rear of 188 Railway Parade. This site was developed into a purpose-built 2,000 square metre warehouse facility, with construction successfully completed in July 2021.

2022

20 Durham Road was sold to facilitate the acquisition of 2 Vincent Street, Bassendean. This strategic purchase provided an additional 2,500 square metres of land and 1,000 square metres of warehouse space, further enhancing the company’s operational capacity.

2024

In 2024, West Coast Suspensions proudly celebrated its centenary—a significant milestone marking 100 years of operation. To commemorate the occasion, a local artist was commissioned to design and paint a mural on the exterior of the 2 Vincent Street warehouse. The celebrations culminated in a Centennial event held at the warehouse, attended by customers, staff, and partners, honoring a century of innovation and service.
